On September 3, 1972, more than 25,000 fans filled Texas Stadium in Irving to witness a landmark bout between two of professional wrestling’s most iconic figures. NWA World Heavyweight Champion Dory Funk Jr., known for his technical prowess and stoic ring presence, defended his title against hometown hero Fritz Von Erich in a match that embodied the growing popularity and regional pride of Texas wrestling.
Promoted as a clash of styles and legacies, the bout lived up to its billing. For 60 minutes, Funk and Von Erich engaged in a brutal, strategic contest that left the crowd on edge. The match ended in a time-limit draw—Funk retained the title, but Von Erich’s standing among Texas fans only grew stronger.
The event marked one of the earliest major wrestling cards held at Texas Stadium and helped pave the way for the Von Erich family’s lasting legacy in the sport.
